Feat. Dacey Harlot & Akira Shell
The first features Akira as an aspiring Olympian, in the Heptathlon. You’re her coach and trainer, covering everything from nutrition, to event performance, to physical wellness, to injury prevention and recovery. Currently, she is ranked #1 in the US and top 5 in the world, trailing on girls from Russia, Romania and Ukraine. If she is to make up the gap, she has to specifically improve in the 100-meter hurdles, so that has been your training focus. This morning, during hurdle work, Akira clipped a hurdle with her right foot and when she came down her ankle twisted violently under the full body weight. She curled in a ball on the track crying in agony and despair, fearing both her Olympic dreams and her ankle are shattered. Realizing you need to act quickly to minimize the damage, you get her off the track, in your car, and back to your office/apartment where you can examine and care for her.
That’s where the video starts, you helping her in the door. She’s in a lot of pain and from sprain vids I have of her, Akira does this very well. You left her shoe on to provide support until you got her home, but she is unable to put any pressure on her foot and she has an arm around your shoulder gasping and moaning as you help her to get settled on the sofa. Once settled, you very carefully unlace her sneaker and ease it off, then her sock (ankle sock or knee-high athletic sock, either is great.) You can see her ankle is already swelling and tell her you need to get ice and an ace bandage.
While you are off camera for about 30 seconds, Akira clutches at her lower leg and ankle and generally writhes in pain. She’s good at this and will do well. When you return you ask her how she’s holding up and she complains it won’t stop throbbing and the pain is getting worse. You help ease her back so she is resting on her elbows so you can examine her ankle. You very gently and methodically run your finger tips over her foot, ankle and calf while she moans and bites her lip in pain. The good news, it isn’t broken. The bad news is she has a very severe sprain. She tearfully asks if there is any chance of competing at the upcoming Olympic trials. You sadly inform her the trials are no longer a possibility, as she will need to stay off her ankle for about 6 weeks. She argues it isn’t broken, if you tape it up she can at least give it a try, but you point out its swelling up like a balloon and it’s going to be a while before she can even wear a shoe, let alone walk or run. Then you share with her the reason you retired from competition to coach is you had a very similar ankle injury 5 years ago, tried to come back too soon, and now have chronic weakness in your ankle. You won’t allow to make the same mistake. You carefully bandage her ankle as she whimpers.
When you finish, you hold her foot on a pillow in her lap with an ice pack. She’s still in pain and heartbroken about the trials, but she starts to calm down. With the ice in place, you gently massage the ball of her foot which relaxes her even more. She thanks you repeatedly for taking care of her. You tell her that’s what you’re there for, to protect her and care for her. She doesn’t know what she would do without you. You lightly kiss her shin above the bandage, then the top of her foot at the base of the toes. She smiles for the first time, tells you she’s never had anyone take care of her like this before. She feels really helpless and it feels so good to have someone take charge and taking care of her. You tell her to just rest now, and she settles back and closes her eyes as you continue to massager her foot and play with her toes. She smiles sleepily and says she’s glad you’re there and she hopes you will stay, she needs you. You promise you will be there as long as she needs you, and kiss her toes again as she rests
